Why is Windows asking for a BitLocker recovery key?

BitLocker encrypts a drive to help protect its data. Windows may ask for the recovery key after a hardware, BIOS or security-setting change.

Where to look for your key

  • Check the Microsoft account that was used on this device.
  • Look for a saved or printed copy from when BitLocker was set up.
  • For a work or school device, ask the organisation’s IT administrator.

Why can the prompt appear?

  • A BIOS or UEFI setting may have changed.
  • Hardware or security settings may have been changed.
  • A system update or unexpected change can trigger a recovery check.

What should you do?

  • Stay calm and first look for the recovery key associated with this device.
  • Avoid random BIOS or security changes; they can make troubleshooting harder.
  • Do not send your recovery key in a public message. If you are unsure, ask for help before proceeding.
