Windows update is stuck: safe steps to try

An update can appear frozen at a percentage while Windows is still working. Low storage, a previous update or a driver conflict may also cause problems.

Check before restarting

  • How long has the screen shown the same state?
  • Is there disk activity or another sign that the computer is still working?
  • Does the drive have enough free space?

Common causes

  • Not enough free storage.
  • A previous update did not finish correctly.
  • A driver or security program conflicts with the update.

A cautious approach

  • If the computer is still active, give it time and keep it connected to power.
  • Free up space only when you can do so safely.
  • Restart only when it is clearly stuck; recurring failures should be diagnosed before repeated attempts.
