How to recognise malware: signs to look for

A pop-up does not automatically mean malware, but unwanted software can cause browser redirects, slow performance and unfamiliar programs.

Common signs

  • The browser opens unfamiliar pages or ads.
  • Settings change or new extensions appear unexpectedly.
  • Security alerts keep returning or the computer behaves unusually.

What you can do safely

  • Do not click pop-ups that promise an urgent fix.
  • Note what changed and when the behaviour began.
  • Use your installed security software and keep Windows and the browser updated.

When to get help

  • If unwanted software returns or security warnings persist, have the device checked.
  • Do not enter payment details or passwords into a pop-up claiming to be support.
