Windows blue screen: what does it mean?

A blue screen means Windows encountered a serious error. Drivers, memory, storage or conflicting software can all be involved; the message alone does not identify the cause.

Record what happened

  • Write down the stop code or take a photo of the screen.
  • Note what you were doing when it appeared.
  • Check whether the problem began after an update or new program.

Common causes

  • A driver may not work well with Windows or the hardware.
  • Faulty memory or storage can make the system unstable.
  • Some security or tuning software can conflict with Windows.

Safe first steps

  • If Windows still starts, make a backup of important files.
  • Check whether the problem began after a recent change.
  • If the blue screen keeps returning, have the cause checked instead of reinstalling Windows straight away.
