Wi-Fi keeps dropping: where should you start?

Unstable Wi-Fi can come from the router, distance, interference or one device. First find out whether other devices have the same problem.

Start with these questions

  • Does Wi-Fi drop on every device or only one laptop?
  • Does it happen mainly in one room or far from the router?
  • Did a router restart change anything?

Common causes

  • Walls and distance can weaken the signal.
  • Wireless interference or a busy channel can affect stability.
  • A laptop network adapter, driver, modem or provider connection may be involved.

Safe first checks

  • Test close to the router.
  • Restart the modem and router, then reconnect the device.
  • If only one device has trouble, check its adapter and driver. If the whole home is affected, check the router or connection.
