Slow PC? Seven common causes and practical checks
A slow PC is frustrating, but the cause can often be narrowed down. Check the symptoms before choosing an upgrade or cleanup.
Seven things that can slow a PC
- An older hard drive instead of an SSD.
- Too many programs starting with Windows.
- A nearly full drive.
- Updates that are incomplete or overdue.
- Malware or unwanted background software.
- Limited memory during heavy multitasking.
- Overheating that makes the system slow itself down.
What to check first
- Notice whether startup, opening apps or all tasks are slow.
- Use Task Manager to see whether storage, memory or a process is heavily used.
- Make a backup before repair or upgrade work.
When an upgrade may help
- An SSD may help if the storage drive is the bottleneck. Extra memory helps only when the system is short of RAM.
- “Disk at 100%” is a symptom, not a diagnosis; check what is causing it first.
