Laptop overheating or dusty: why does it get so hot?
Some warmth is normal. A laptop that stays very hot, runs its fan constantly or slows down during light work may have a cooling problem.
Signs to notice
- The fan runs loudly or almost continuously.
- The case becomes unusually hot, or performance suddenly drops.
- The laptop shuts down unexpectedly.
Possible causes
- Dust can restrict airflow through fans and cooling channels.
- Cooling parts or thermal paste may be worn.
- A demanding program or soft surface may restrict cooling or increase heat.
Safe first steps
- Place the laptop on a hard, flat surface and keep vents clear.
- Save your work and see whether the problem happens during a particular task.
- If it stays hot or shuts down, arrange an inspection. Avoid opening the device if you are not equipped to do so.
