Laptop battery drains quickly: wear, settings or a fault?

A battery that runs down quickly can be worn, but screen brightness, background apps, cooling or Windows settings may also contribute.

Signs of a battery problem

  • The charge percentage drops in large, unexpected steps.
  • The laptop charges for a long time but runs only briefly.
  • Windows reports a battery issue, or the laptop works only with its charger.

Things you can check

  • Lower screen brightness and close apps you do not need.
  • Check Windows battery information for a substantial capacity loss.
  • Notice whether the problem changes with a different charger, if one is suitable for your model.

When to stop using it

  • If the battery is swollen, unusually hot or smells strange, stop using and charging the laptop. Do not press or open the battery.
  • A clearly worn battery may need replacement; the exact part depends on the laptop model.
