Adding RAM: when is more memory useful?

More RAM can help when many apps are open at once, but it is not always the biggest speed improvement. Check the bottleneck first.

Signs memory may be limited

  • Apps stutter while several programs or browser tabs are open.
  • Video calls, office apps and many tabs are used together.
  • The system frequently relies on storage while you multitask.

When an upgrade may make sense

  • The computer is demonstrably short of memory for your normal workload.
  • The device is otherwise in good condition.
  • The correct memory type and supported capacity have been confirmed.

When to consider something else

  • An old hard drive may be causing slow startup and app loading.
  • If the computer is slow in every situation, check storage, software and heat too.
  • Not every laptop allows a practical memory upgrade.
